Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

my last night in Djemma el Fna...was as it had been every night proceeding......
this place illuminates at night with smoke, snake charmers, bedouin storytellers, motor bikes, lovers strolling
it is a place of unwavering magic that I hope to come back to again and again...
remembering it will be easy....
it was terribly hard to let go...

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

the way through the Ourika Valley was calming
and quite picturesque
Apparently there were 7 waterfalls...I was not prepared for the trek...we stopped at #1
met some British friends along the way
lets be honest you can't smoke Hookah if you climbed a mountain in search of 7 waterfalls and your out of breath...priorities

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

needing a bit of an escape from the bustle of Marrakesh I headed to the Ourika Valley an hour and a half away

We stopped at a medicine/herbal pharmacy

oils and dried herbs

the air was so clean I just kept breathing heavy in disbelief...

Many Berber people live in the mountains in this region...

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

an odd choice the El Bahia Palace was showing a group of contemporary artists works...
curiosier
and curiosier

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

I searched for a few days to find the El Bahia Palace which was literally a few windy blocks from my Riad...it was beautiful but sparse...

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

the streets wound into a million different turns...pedestrians, motor bikes, horses and anything that could fit found its way through

Tea for two...I was swooned by rug sellers...it was such a fun experience I wanted to stay all day...

I searched and searched in several countries for a chess set for my dad's birthday...I found a place in the souks and even got to watch the wood worker make some of it by hand...or foot...

the smells of the city...

Throughout the week people were preparing for Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday as largely celebrated as Ramadan...sheep are sacrificed and 4 days of eating and celebrating ensue...

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

shadow self in the red city...

El Baadi Palace...apparently once the beauty of the Alhambra in Granada...

crumbling reminders

of doors that once led to a palatial palace

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

Koutoubia Mosque marks the center of the city and the beginning of the Medina

Most of my time in the city was spent roaming in the hot sun, lost in the labyrinth of streets....beautiful signage...however unclear and unhelpful...

wandering around I happened upon the very TOP SECRET: Sex and the City 2 shoots in the Medina...my second citing of the day so I decided to get a few shots

no sign of the ladies but I was amused by the old Moroccan men who kept stepping over cords trying to hear the dialogue during takes...

needless to say I have to see the film...if only to remind me of the beauty of this place

Marrakesh: HIGHLIGHTS

It has been a dream of mine for quite some time...and it finally came true...after Barcelona, a last ditch effort and I FINALLY made my way to Morocco...not an entry I would have imagined...may I suggest not getting to Morocco in the cover of night...I felt like I was quite possibly on the verge of being hijaked...not so much because of my lack of Arabic or being only one of 2 women at the airport at 1am...but rather the way my "transfer" from the airport stopped in the middle of the Medina...empty, cobble stoned streets littered with kittens and the days garbage...the boot suddenly popping open and being told to follow the driver down several dark empty alley ways...

after a hectic arrival...several interrupted hours of sleep later...this was my first meal...one of many Tagines (lamb of course!) that I would devour...I mean enjoy during my week in Marrakesh

since I was held hostage in a hostel for 2 days...well not really but that's how I see it, when I got to my Riad I could have literally hugged the bed all day...

needless to say I loved every cavern of the room...the bathroom was a design delight...

courtyard in the Riad and an absolutely lovely breakfast and long cups of mint tea

Honestly I did more seeing than picture taking...I had much more trepidation that the Nikon necked tourist sauntering through the chaotic streets...what follows is not nearly what was seen but I got some decent shots in...

Barcelona: HIGHLIGHTS

la ultima noche...

happened upon La Sardana, a Catalan dance ...near Barri Gotic

the square was full of great energy and fellowship

spent some time with my friend Rachel who I met in Oaxaca years ago...it was a lovely last night...if you must go...
